The Gallardo Superleggera, unveiled at the 2007 Geneva Auto Show, was 100 kg lighter than the base car through carbon-fibre parts and had 530 PS; 618 were built. The LP 570-4 Superleggera of March 2010 brought the same idea to the 5.2-litre car with 570 PS, and the LP 570-4 Spyder Performante, announced in November 2010, was its convertible version. The LP 570-4 Squadra Corse, unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, was a street-legal version of the Super Trofeo race car limited to 50 units, with deliveries from September 2013.

The LP 560-4's V10 fires unevenly by design, a departure built into Lamborghini's biggest Gallardo update.

Lamborghini recalled about 1,500 early Gallardos over power steering fluid that could leak and catch fire.

The Gallardo has a supercar-sized annoyance at the pump: its top-mounted fuel port doesn't play nice with the anti-vapor sheath on most American gas pumps, so owners learned to pull it back by hand.

The Gallardo is named not for a bull but for an 18th-century breeder of fighting bulls.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
