FactThe Gallardo is named not for a bull but for an 18th-century breeder of fighting bulls.
The Gallardo was Lamborghini's second car under Audi and its V10 entry model, built on the basis of Italdesign's 1995 Calà concept and named after an 18th-century bull breeder. The original car used an even-firing 5.0-litre V10 with all-wheel drive and either a six-speed manual or the "E-gear" automated manual, both built by Graziano. For the 2006 model year power rose to 520 PS with lower gearing. The Gallardo Spyder, with a retractable soft top, was unveiled in January 2006. In all 14,022 Gallardos were built from 2003 to 2013.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The LP 560-4's V10 fires unevenly by design, a departure built into Lamborghini's biggest Gallardo update.

Lamborghini recalled about 1,500 early Gallardos over power steering fluid that could leak and catch fire.

The Gallardo has a supercar-sized annoyance at the pump: its top-mounted fuel port doesn't play nice with the anti-vapor sheath on most American gas pumps, so owners learned to pull it back by hand.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
