The third-generation Picanto made its official global debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, designed under Peter Schreyer on the Hyundai-Kia BA platform. It was equipped with a choice of three engines: the outgoing model's 1.0-litre Kappa II three-cylinder in multi-point injected and turbocharged direct-injected versions, and a 1.2-litre four-cylinder; the 1.0-litre engines came only with a 5-speed manual, while the 1.2-litre was also offered with a 4-speed automatic. It won the iF product design award and the Red Dot award in 2018, and What Car? named it Best City Car in 2018. A mid-life facelift was introduced in June 2020, with a five-speed automatic replacing the four-speed, and a second refresh was unveiled in South Korea on 4 July 2023.

Owning one

Kia marketed this Picanto with the world's first nail-art animation — over 900 artificial nails and 1,200 bottles of polish, each nail hand-painted for two hours.

Kia put World Rally champion Marcus Grönholm in the ads for this first Picanto — an odd pairing for a budget city car.
