FactThe first Hyundai i20 wasn't engineered in Korea — Hyundai built an entirely new platform for it at its European technical centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, purely to crack Europe's B-segment.
The first-generation Hyundai i20 (PB) uses a new platform created at Hyundai's European technical centre in Rüsselsheim to let Hyundai move into Europe's highly competitive subcompact B segment, with a 2,525 mm (99.4 in) wheelbase that gives a large passenger cabin, MacPherson struts at the front, a torsion beam rear end and rack-and-pinion steering. It was designed by Thomas Bürkle and built in İzmit, Turkey, Chennai, India and Bekasi, Indonesia, as a three- or five-door hatchback related to the Hyundai Accent/Verna (RB) and Kia Rio (UB). The i20 has seven four-cylinder engine options, four petrol and three diesel, and a slightly upgraded iGen i20 went on sale in India in March 2012. It earned a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2009 and was named one of Euro NCAP's "top five safest cars for 2009".

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

India's i20 is 45mm shorter than the European version — not for styling, but to duck under the 4-metre length that triggers a steeper Indian tax bracket.

Spy shots of this i20 showed boomerang-shaped tail lights heading into production — but Hyundai scrapped the whole rear-end design and redrew it before the car ever launched.
