A second NSX-R was unveiled in 2002, again only for Japan and again based on the coupé for its lower weight and greater rigidity. Carbon fibre was used for a larger rear spoiler, a vented hood (said to be the largest one-piece carbon-fibre bonnet on a production road car) and the deck lid; audio, sound insulation, air conditioning and power steering were deleted, bringing weight down to 1,270 kg. Each 3.2-litre V6 was hand-assembled and balanced to ten times the usual accuracy, though Honda rated it at the standard 290 hp. Motoharu Kurosawa lapped the Nürburgring in 7:56 in a 2002 NSX-R. First-generation NSX production ended on 30 November 2005.

The Type S-Zero lapped Suzuka 1.5 seconds quicker than the NSX-R, and Honda built only 30 of them.

Honda stripped the NSX-R down so aggressively — ditching A/C, sound deadening and more — that it shed about 120 kg versus a standard NSX, landing at just 1,230 kg.

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
