The Ford S-Max is a mid-size MPV produced by Ford Europe for the European market, which Ford also describes as an SAV (sports activity vehicle). Introduced at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, it went on sale in May 2006 alongside the new-generation Ford Galaxy, intended to be as sporty as a saloon and as spacious as an MPV, drawing inspiration from the seven-seater Galaxy and the compact C-Max; it was voted European Car of the Year 2007 on 13 November 2006 and was the first Ford to feature Kinetic Design styling (angular headlights, twin trapezoidal grilles and large wheel arches). It is related to the Galaxy, Edge and Mondeo, and received many positive reviews and a 5-star/36-point Euro NCAP rating; Ford had plans to sell it in Japan under Mazda, which became unviable after the split. All S-Maxes use versions of the Duratorq or Duratec engines with a five- or six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic option: 1.8 TDCi (101 and 125 PS), 2.0 TDCi (115 and 140 PS), a 2.2 TDCi 175 PS added in March 2008 (0–62 mph in 9.0 seconds), a 2.0 140 PS TDCi manual offered from September 2008 with 159 g/km CO2, petrol 2.0 (145 PS and 130 PS Flex Fuel), 2.3 (160 PS automatic) and the 2.5 (shared with the Focus ST, 220 PS, manual); new petrol engines for 2010–2011 were the 1.6 EcoBoost 160 PS and 2.0 EcoBoost 203 PS Powershift, and for 2012 also a 2.0 EcoBoost 240 PS and 2.0 TDCi 163 PS and 2.2 TDCi 200 PS diesels. It has also been converted with an aftermarket Langford Performance "Whisper" hybrid powertrain, and a five-seater version without the back row of seats was offered.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

In 2021, Ford stripped every combustion-only engine out of the S-Max lineup and replaced them all with a single 2.5L petrol hybrid — one powertrain for the final years of production.

This Presage minivan shares its underlying platform with the Teana sedan and the North American Murano crossover — one architecture doing three very different jobs.

Subaru's family-hauling Exiga got an unlikely STi treatment in 2009 — front spoiler, sport muffler, tighter suspension and a leather Momo wheel — but only 300 were ever built.

YRV stands for Young Recreational Vehicle, a mini MPV built to out-handle its own segment rivals.

The Terraza was Buick's first-ever minivan for the North American market - a badge-engineered cousin of the Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, and Saturn Relay.

The restyled 1994 Lumina Minivan quietly made American automotive history: it was the first minivan sold in the US with a power sliding door you could open by remote.

The first-generation Lumina APV minivan was nicknamed the "Dustbuster" by the press for its sharply sloped windshield, which pushed the dashboard far forward of the driver.

Its steeply sloped windshield gave the Lumina APV one of the deepest dashboards ever fitted to a mass-produced car.

The first Presage wasn't really its own car underneath — most of its parts came straight from the Nissan R'nessa, with more shared with its platform twin, the Bassara.
