Launched in October 1998 in Brazil, the first-generation Fiat Strada is the cargo-carrying derivative of "Project 178", made to replace the Fiat City (a pickup version of the Fiorino, itself a commercial derivative of the Fiat Uno), with a maximum loading capacity of 700 kg (1,543 lb) and a cargo space of 1,770 mm × 1,314 mm. It is a unibody front-wheel-drive coupé utility that shares its platform with the Palio, Siena and Uno, mainly built in Brazil and also assembled in South Africa and exported to Europe. In Europe it launched in April 1999 with two engines, the 1.2 Fire petrol (73 hp) and the 1.7 turbodiesel (70 hp). The 2001 facelift, by Giorgetto Giugiaro, brought a new front and interior and the début of an extended-cab version (a Strada Adventure with "off-road" looks followed in 2002); the Mark III, launched in 2004, took its revised front and interior from the Palio, added a second Strada Adventure and a 1.9-litre JTD diesel for Europe, and in South Africa came in 1.2 Fire MPI, 1.6 Torque MPI and 1.7 turbo diesel forms plus the 30 cm longer X-Space with the 1.4 Fire MPI.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

This Strada generation finally added a proper 4-door, 5-seat double cab — a first for the model.

In Mexico this same Strada quietly became a Ram — rebadged by Ram Trucks as the Ram 700 starting with the 2015 model year.

Marketed across Latin America as a proper working pickup, this first Strada could actually carry only 700 kg — modest beside the tough-truck image Fiat sold it with.

Holden killed its ute in 1984, then resurrected it in 1990 on a Commodore floorpan after a six-year gap.

Holden's 1960 FB was a modest facelift with one first: it was the first Holden ever built in left-hand drive, built specifically to chase export markets.

Holden's first home-grown ute could barely haul 360 kg — about one strong adult and an esky of beer — a fraction of what a modern ute carries, yet it put Holden in the work-truck business for good.

This FE generation was the first Holden ever assembled outside Australia — New Zealand built its first example in January 1957.

Holden actually built a wagon version of the FJ alongside the ute and sedan — it just never reached production, staying a one-off prototype.

Nearly every VP Commodore sedan had a badge-engineered Toyota twin sold as the Lexcen — except the ute. Holden built the VP Utility, and no Toyota equivalent of it was ever made.

This EH ute belongs to one of the fastest-selling runs in Australian car history — 256,959 EH Holdens, sedans to utes, sold across barely 18 months before the HD replaced it.

The VS ute ran five years without a full redesign, the longest single utility generation Holden built after 1980.
