FactThe TR-XX van faced looser emissions rules and got a carburetted six-valve version of the turbo engine, without the passenger car's catalyst.
The TR-XX was the turbocharged top of the third-generation (L200) Mira range, built in Japan from March 1990 until the L500 replaced it in September 1994. The passenger car had a fuel-injected, intercooled 659 cc EF-JL SOHC 12-valve turbo three-cylinder making 64 PS, while the TR-XX van used a carburetted six-valve EF-XL version making 61 PS. A permanent four-wheel-drive X-4 with the same 64 PS engine arrived in November 1990 and was folded into the TR-XX series with the August 1992 facelift, when the TR-XX van was dropped. The TR-XX itself was front-wheel drive only.
