FactGM kept building the discontinued first-generation Onix as the Joy alongside its own replacement for five more years.
The Chevrolet Onix is a subcompact marketed by Chevrolet, launched in 2012 to replace the Chevrolet Corsa and some versions of the Celta, produced mainly at General Motors Brazil's plants in Gravataí and São Caetano do Sul (and by GM Colmotores in Bogotá, Colombia, in 2023 and 2024). The first generation, on the GM Gamma II platform, was a five-door hatchback with a four-door sedan sold in Brazil as the Chevrolet Prisma (2012–2019) and as the Joy and Joy Plus in later years. It had three trim levels (LS, LT and LTZ) and two flex-fuel four-cylinder engines: a 1.0-litre making 78 PS on petrol or 80 PS on ethanol, and a 1.4-litre making 98 PS on petrol or 106 PS on ethanol, with a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual or 6-speed 6T40 automatic. The 2016 facelift added a touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a crossover-styled Onix Activ with raised suspension, plastic cladding and a roof rack; the base LS kept the original front end as the Onix Joy and Prisma Joy, and from late 2019 the Joy and Joy Plus stayed on sale after the second generation replaced the Onix and Prisma in Brazil, built at São Caetano do Sul through 2022 and then in Colombia, until the Joy was discontinued in 2024 when GM ceased operations in Colombia and Ecuador. All versions have front-wheel drive, MacPherson strut front and twist-beam rear suspension, dual airbags, ABS and power steering; the Prisma sedan launched in February 2013 with a 500-litre boot, and the 1.0 has 14-inch wheels against 15-inch on the 1.4. In Latin NCAP the basic two-airbag Onix scored three adult stars and two child stars in December 2014. Wheelbase 99.5 in and width 67.1 in (68.4 in for the Activ); the lengths, heights and curb weights are given as ranges and are not entered.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The budget Onix proved a safety overachiever: its basic six-airbag trims scored a perfect five stars for both adults and children in Latin NCAP testing — rare territory for an entry-level subcompact.
