The Veyron EB 16.4 was Bugatti's first car under Volkswagen ownership, a mid-engine coupé built in Molsheim, France and named after the racing driver Pierre Veyron. Its 8.0-litre W16 engine has four turbochargers and 64 valves and drives all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox built by Ricardo. Volkswagen and TÜV certified 736 kW (987 hp), and the original version's top speed is 407 km/h (253 mph), reached only with a special top-speed key. 252 of the 16.4 coupé were produced between 2005 and 2011.

Owning one

Bugatti cut the roof off its fastest car, then proved the open-top Veyron could still top 254 mph.

Bugatti built five Super Sports with the speed limiter switched off entirely, the only Veyrons sold without one.

Bugatti shipped the Grand Sport with a spare umbrella as its emergency roof if the main top was left behind.

Even tire service is exotic: Veyron wheels can only be fitted with their special Michelins in France, and the job alone costs $70,000.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
