The BMW 327 is a medium-sized touring coupé produced by BMW between 1937 and 1941, and again after 1945, on a shortened version of the 326 chassis. The first 327, launched in 1937, was a cabriolet, joined in 1938 by a fixed-head coupé; it was shorter and lower than its sedan counterpart but shared the famous BMW grille and a streamlined form. It used the hydraulic brake control, gearbox, clutch and front suspension first seen on the 326, along with the live axle used on the 320 and 328, and the BMW M78 straight-six (1,971 cc) with an advertised top speed of 125 km/h (78 mph). The 327 was the bigger seller, overshadowed by the 80 PS 328 among enthusiasts: 1,396 base-engined versions were built between 1937 and 1941, with significant further production after 1945. Assembly resumed under Awtowelo from partially completed 1941 cars and stockpiled parts (about 150 built before the factory was renamed EMW), and a 1952 ruling required Eisenach-produced models such as the 327 to be badged EMW rather than BMW; 505 were produced with one or other badge, though clear production figures are hard to obtain. Later cars have a different bonnet line and fender creases. Wheelbase 2,750 mm (108 in), length 4,500 mm (180 in), width 1,600 mm (63 in), height 1,430 mm (56 in). The higher-powered 327/28 is catalogued as its own generation.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Looked like a standard 327, hid an M328 engine underneath: only 569 of these quicker 327/28s were ever built.

The Celica XX, Japan's name for the A60 Supra, introduced the world's first in-car navigation computer.

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
