When BMW took over Glas, it dropped its own 1.6-litre 'New Class' engine into the old Glas GT body — tilted 30 degrees off vertical, a quirk carried over just to keep the bonnet line low.

This 1700 GT's bigger engine stood just tall enough that Glas had to add a ridge down the middle of the hood to clear it — a bulge born purely of engineering necessity.

The 1300 GT didn't just change hands when BMW bought Glas — it changed engines too, refitted with the 1.6-litre unit from the BMW 1600 and sold on as the BMW 1600 GT.
