FactGroup 4 rally homologation demanded 400 road cars, so Vauxhall built the tartan-trimmed, 16-valve Chevette HS just to go rallying.
Vauxhall's version of GM's T-car family, a rear-wheel-drive supermini built at Luton and Ellesmere Port from 1975 to 1984 on the Opel Kadett C, using the 1,256 cc OHV engine from the Viva HC rather than Opel's 1,196 cc units. Sold as a hatchback, saloon, estate and van (Bedford Chevanne); 415,000 were sold in Britain. It was cousin to the Chevrolet Chevette, Holden and Isuzu Gemini and Pontiac Acadian. The January 1978 Chevette HS put a 16-valve 2,279 cc slant-four with two Stromberg carburettors, a Getrag five-speed, GRP air dam and Vega alloy wheels into a rally homologation special (Group 4 needed 400 road cars); it was silver with red decals and a tartan interior. The HSR evolution arrived in April 1980 and won rallies including the 1979 British Open for drivers and 1981 for manufacturers.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.
