FactThis Aqua was a genuine industry first: Toyota says it’s the first production car anywhere to use a high-output bipolar nickel–metal hydride battery.
The second-generation Aqua was unveiled on 19 July 2021 and went on sale the same day, built on the GA-B platform shared with the XP210 Yaris (and related to the Yaris Cross and Sienta), with the wheelbase extended by 50 mm over the previous generation and the 1,695 mm width retained to stay in the Japanese "compact car" category. Front-engine, front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive (E-Four), with the 1490 cc M15A-FXE three-cylinder petrol hybrid (MXPK10/11/15/16): 67 kW (90 hp) from the engine alone, 59 kW (79 hp) from the front 1NM motor, 3.9–4.7 kW from the rear 1MM motor and 85 kW (114 hp) combined system output, with an eCVT. Grades were B, X, G and Z (the GR Sport added on 29 November 2022); Toyota calls it the world's first vehicle to use a high-output bipolar nickel–metal hydride battery, used on X, G, Z and GR Sport, while the B grade uses a 4.3 Ah lithium-ion unit. A mid-cycle facelift was announced on 1 September 2025 with a hammerhead grille, slim LED headlights, updated Toyota Safety Sense, dash cameras, a Blind Spot Monitor and a subscription-only "U" grade under KINTO. Wheelbase 2,600 mm (102.4 in), length 4,050–4,095 mm, width 1,695 mm (66.7 in), height 1,485–1,505 mm, curb weight 1,080–1,230 kg. Japan sales: 72,495 in 2021, 72,084 in 2022, 80,268 in 2023, 64,180 in 2024 and 68,499 in 2025.
