The Toyota Curren ("current") is a sport compact coupé built from January 1994 to July 1998 (42,000 units) at Tahara on the T200-series Celica chassis, sharing the Celica coupé's interior and rear end but with rectangular headlamps instead of four round ones — a traditional halogen look that let Toyota sell it at Vista Store dealers, as the Celica was exclusive to Corolla Store — and directly replacing the Toyopet-Store-exclusive T160 Corona Coupé. In 1994 it came as the ST206 (FS, XS, ZS and ZS Sport Selection, the last with a limited-slip differential and leather steering wheel; the FS and XS with the 2.0-litre 3S-FE at 103 kW / 138 hp and the ZS with the 2.0-litre 3S-GE at 125–132 kW / 168–177 hp) and the ST207, the XS Touring Selection (3S-FE) with four-wheel steering and Toyota's TACS active suspension (dropped in 1997); in 1995 the XS and ZS S-Package (rear spoiler, rear wiper, alloys, slightly more power on the ZS) arrived, and the ST208 base model (TS and TS Private Selection, 1.8-litre 4S-FE at 92 kW / 123 hp). The 1996 facelift brought a new front bumper, clear front turn signals and a new grille, with darker-tinted taillamps. It shared its chassis with the Celica GT-Four (ST205), Corona, Corona EXiV, Carina and Carina ED (with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic).

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Toyota built just 300 units of the Curren TRD Sports for Japan only — a vanishingly rare trim on a coupe most people have never heard of.

The Curren was mechanically a Celica wearing a different face — Toyota restyled the front purely so it could be sold through a separate dealership network.

The Celica XX, Japan's name for the A60 Supra, introduced the world's first in-car navigation computer.

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
