Unveiled at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show and jointly developed with Daihatsu, sold at Netz dealers as "A Car-shaped Music Player" for the younger generation. The 2008 facelift added an Aero Package (replacing the V and Q grades). It was badge-engineered as the Daihatsu Coo (Japan and Taiwan, May 2006–January 2013) and Materia (July 2007–2015, the only one with a 1.5 turbo, for South Africa) and the Subaru Dex (November 2008–November 2012, K3-VE 1.3 with FWD or 4WD). The second-generation Scion xB was a separate design, sold in Japan as the Corolla Rumion. Toyota ended it in May 2016 (sales in Japan July 2016) and replaced it with the Daihatsu-made Tank and Roomy. All Toyota models had the Super ECT four-speed automatic.

Owning one

This boxy little bB had an unlikely godfather: its chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, would go on to lead development of the Toyota 86 and the Supra.
