FactThis humble hatchback marked history: as the Chevrolet Cruze, it was the car that brought GM back to manufacturing in Japan after a 62-year absence.
Revealed as the Chevrolet YGM1 concept at the 33rd Tokyo Motor Show in 1999, the Chevrolet Cruze (codenamed HR51S and HR81S) was derived from the Suzuki Ignis, with styling and most engineering by GM's Australian arm, Holden; GM revealed the production Cruze on 22 October 2001, with sales starting on 1 November in Japan, built at Suzuki's Kosai plant. It was sold as the Holden Cruze in Australia until January 2006, and the Japanese Chevrolet continued until 2008. From 2003 Suzuki of Europe adopted the Cruze modifications as an update of the Ignis, lengthening it by 145 mm behind the rear axle and building it in Esztergom, Hungary, and Subaru sold the same car in Europe as the G3X Justy. The 1.3-litre was rated at 65 kW (88 PS; 87 hp) and 118 N⋅m (87 lbf⋅ft), the 1.5-litre at 73 kW (99 PS; 98 hp) and 143 N⋅m (105 lbf⋅ft), and a diesel version used Fiat's 1.3-litre Multijet engine.
