FactSubaru built a deliberately gentle Pleo, a low-boost 'mildcharged' supercharger tuned to feel like a bigger car, not a faster one.
The first-generation Pleo went on sale in Japan on October 9, 1998, replacing the Vivio, when Japanese regulations dictated a size change in the kei car tax bracket and every kei car model from every make was redesigned. It is taller than conventional kei car hatchbacks but shorter than the definitive microvan, the Suzuki Wagon R, and competed with the Honda Life, Daihatsu Move and Mitsubishi Toppo. The car was available with three variations of the 658 cc EN07 engine: a naturally aspirated one with 46 PS, a sporty supercharged one with 64 PS, and a "mildcharged" version with a lower-boost supercharger and 60 PS, aimed at power characteristics similar to those of a one-litre car.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

A Subaru-badged Pleo is actually built by Daihatsu, the result of Toyota's investment ending Subaru's own kei production.
