FactPorsche engineered the engine mounts and Ricardo redesigned the combustion chambers on Škoda's first front-wheel-drive car.
Škoda's first car with a transversely mounted front engine and front-wheel drive, premiered in July 1987 at the Brno Engineering Fair in Czechoslovakia (Type 781), styled by Bertone under Marc Deschamps. The communist government approved development in 1982, work started in 1983, and disputes with Nuccio Bertone meant it was not designed until mid-1985; a four-door saloon and a two-door hatchback coupé were fully designed but never built. It replaced the rear-engined 105/120 Estelle and used a single 1,289 cc four-cylinder pushrod engine (with combustion chambers redesigned by Ricardo and mountings engineered with Porsche), driving through a five-speed manual. A five-door estate, the Forman (Type 785), followed in 1990 (Favorit Estate in the UK from June 1991) and a two-door Pick-up (Type 787) in 1991. After Volkswagen took over Škoda in 1991, catalytic converters and Bosch Mono-Motronic injection arrived (Li, GLi and GLXi) with a 1993 facelift; about 50,000 were sold in the UK from 1989 to 1995. Favorit RS cars finished first and second in the under-1300 cc class of the 1993 Monte Carlo Rally and the works car won the 2-litre Manufacturers Championship category of the 1994 World Rally Championship. The Felicia replaced it in 1994.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.
