The Renault 20 (R20) is the more affordable of the two executive cars produced by the French automaker Renault between 1975 and 1983, almost identical to the Renault 30 with regard to sheet metal and mechanicals; it was presented at the Paris Salon in November 1975, exactly eight months after the R30 TS, with the same hatchback body styling but two rectangular headlights instead of the R30's quadruple round lights, and was essentially a successor to the Renault 16 in a rather larger body shell. It won the 1978 What Car? Car of the Year; over 622,000 R20s and 145,000 R30s were produced at Sandouville near Le Havre. It launched in L, TL and GTL specifications with the 1647 cc four-cylinder engine (from the Renault 16 TX) rated at 90 PS (raised to 96 PS in 1976) and a 4-speed gearbox, with rear drum brakes, 13-inch wheels and a smaller 60-litre fuel tank than the R30. Soon judged underpowered for the car's size and weight, the R20 gained the TS in July 1977 with a new four-cylinder 1995 cc overhead camshaft engine rated at 109 PS (shared with the Citroën CX and later the Peugeot 505); the R20 Diesel (TD and GTD) with a new 2,068 cc 63.5 PS engine, Renault's first diesel automobile, followed in November 1979, and the R20 TX with a 2165 cc 115 PS engine in July 1980. By late 1981 all 1.6-litre R20s were discontinued. A specially prepared Renault 20 Turbo 4x4 won the 1982 Paris–Alger–Dakar Rally. Between 1979 and 1985 Dacia built a small number under the name Dacia 2000 for the dignitaries of the Communist government of Romania. Production of the 20 and 30 ceased on 16 October 1983 to make way for the Renault 25.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.
