FactThe 19 pulled off something few French cars ever managed — it was the best-selling imported car in Germany for five years running, spanning reunification.
Presented in June 1988 (French sales from September 1988, UK from February 1989), the replacement for the ageing 9 and 11, styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, with Renault's new "Energy" E-type 1.4 and F-type 1.7, and base models on the old OHV Cléon engines. Intended to be Renault's last numeric name; the saloon was the 19 Chamade (Europa in Japan and, after the 1992 facelift, in many markets), the Karmann cabriolet went on sale in early 1992, and codes were B53 (five-door), C53 (three-door), L53 (Chamade) and D53 (Cabriolet). The 19 16S (16V in some markets) with the DOHC 1.8 F7P was shown at the end of 1988 and only added in autumn 1990, with an air-inlet bonnet vent, Recaro seats and 15-inch Speedlines; the non-catalysed 140 PS (Phase 1 only) did 0–100 km/h in 8.2 s. It won Car of the Year in Spain and Germany (1989), Ireland (1990) and Argentina (1993), was the best-selling imported car in West Germany in 1990 and in Germany 1991–94, and the platform lived on in the first Mégane. Production lasted to 2000 in Argentina and Turkey.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.
