FactThe 944's four-cylinder was essentially a Porsche 928 V8 cut in half, though Porsche says almost no parts actually swap between the two engines.
A two-door coupé and cabriolet built from 1982 to 1991 on the 924 platform, front-engined and rear-driven, designed by Harm Lagaay; with over 163,000 built it was Porsche's most successful sports car until the Boxster and 997 Carrera, and it gave way to the 968 after extensive revisions for the 1992 model year. It came in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms: the base 2.5 L (163 PS, 143–147 hp in the US), the 1987 944 S with a DOHC 16-valve 190 PS, a 1989 2.7 L, the 1989 944 S2 with a 3.0 L 211 PS, and the intercooled 944 Turbo (951) at 220 PS (217 hp in the US) from 1985, the 1988 Turbo S at 250 PS and 350 N⋅m, and from 1989 a 250 PS Turbo. The Turbo Cabriolet was unveiled in February 1991, built with ASC. Curb weight rose from 1,180 kg to 1,330 kg from 1988 (1,416 kg for Turbos from 1987).

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
