FactThe Satellite Sebring was named for Sebring International Raceway — and when Plymouth retired it, its replacement was almost badged "Plymouth Sebring" before Chrysler claimed the name for the Cordoba instead.
A new design was introduced for 1971: the Satellite adopted "fuselage" styling, in line with the facelifts on the larger Chrysler C-body models, on the two-door, four-door and wagon models, with 4-door sedans and 2-door coupés no longer sharing sheet metal. Sedans came in base, Custom and Brougham trim, and two-doors in five trim levels (VIN letter R for Satellite followed by the trim letter: RL base, RM Satellite Roadrunner, RH Satellite Sebring, RP Satellite Sebring Plus and top-of-the-line RS Satellite GTX). Two-door models had a loop-type front bumper on a 115 in wheelbase, 4-door sedans and wagons a 117 in wheelbase; for 1973 the two-door models received a more conventional front end with squared-up sheet metal and rear side windows, and the 1974 model year brought 5 mph bumpers on sedans and wagons. The Satellite name was dropped after 1974, when Plymouth's B-body intermediates took the Fury name; the Satellite Sebring, named for Sebring International Raceway, was replaced by the Chrysler Cordoba (originally intended to be called the Plymouth Sebring). Engines: 225 cu in (3.7 L) Slant 6, 273, 318, 340, 360, 383 and 440 cu in and (1971 only) 426 cu in V8s, with a 3-speed manual, 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic; the Road Runner and GTX are catalogued separately. The page gives no power figures for this generation.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The legendary Plymouth Road Runner was never its own model — in 1968 it rode on the exact same body as the everyday Satellite and Belvedere.

The base 1966 Satellite V8 made just 180 hp — but tick the right box and the same car left the factory with the 425-hp "Street Hemi," twin 4-barrel carbs and 10.25:1 compression included.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
