Peugeot's entry-level car from its September 1991 launch (two months later in the UK) to July 2003, developed from the Citroën AX platform to take on the Renault Clio and slotting beneath the 205; 2,798,200 were built. It came as a three-door, with a five-door added in August 1992, and had all-independent suspension with MacPherson struts at the front and compact transverse torsion bars at the rear. Trim levels were the basic XN, mid-range XR, top-spec XT and sporty XSi, and UK special editions included the Kid, Graduate, Inca, Aztec and Independence. The early 1.0 and 1.1 petrols had carburettors and got fuel injection after about a year for EC emissions rules; a 1.4 diesel joined in August 1992 and became a 1.5 in late 1994. The July 1996 Phase II update added side-impact bars, airbags and the 1.6 GTI, and in January 1996 the 106 also became the basis of the Citroën Saxo. An electric 106 Électrique was sold from 1995, and the Rallye is catalogued separately as the 106 Rallye.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Right-hand-drive 106s could never have air conditioning, because the blower motor sat on the driver's side and left no room for the evaporator.
