John Cooper, owner of the Cooper Car Company, saw the potential of the Mini for competition and appealed to BMC management. The Austin and Morris Mini Cooper debuted in September 1961, with the 848 cc engine given a longer stroke to 997 cc, twin SU carburettors, a closer-ratio gearbox and front disc brakes. The more powerful "S" followed in 1963, and the 1,275 cc Cooper S continued until 1971.
