A "quad coupé" with conventional front doors and rear-hinged "suicide" rear doors, designed by Ikuo Maeda (interior by Wu-Huang Chin), first shown at the 2001 North American International Auto Show and built at Hiroshima from February 2003 to June 2012, the direct successor to the RX-7 and related to the NC MX-5. Its 1.3 L (1,308 cc) Renesis twin-rotor with side exhaust ports (better fuel economy and emissions than the RX-7's 13B-REW, allowing US sale) came in four-port form and, from 2003 to 2008, a six-port high-power version with a six-speed manual (a six-speed paddle-shift automatic from 2006–08; the six-port was not sold in Europe). For North America Mazda revised the ratings to 189 and 237 hp soon after launch; the figures below are the page's own engine table. A 2009 facelift lengthened the car to 176.0 in. It was pulled from the European market in 2010 for failing emissions standards and discontinued for 2012 without a successor.

We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The rotary engine that made the RX-8 special is also what killed it in Europe early — pulled from sale there in 2010, two years before production ended everywhere else.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
