FactThe 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed version of this generation is the only MX-5 Mazda ever turbocharged at the factory.
The second-generation MX-5 (Mazda Roadster in Japan; Miata in North America), previewed at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 1997 and built at Hiroshima from January 1998 to 2005, with styling cues borrowed from the third-generation RX-7, designed in 1995 by Tom Matano. Fixed headlamps replaced the NA's retractable ones, which no longer passed pedestrian-safety tests; drag coefficient fell to 0.36, and the rear window became glass with a defogger. The BP-4W 1.8 L gained a 9.5:1 compression ratio and a variable intake system, while the 1.6 L B6 stayed on sale in Europe and Japan. The 1999 10th Anniversary Model (7,500 built) introduced a six-speed manual, Torsen limited-slip differential and Bilstein dampers. The 2001 facelift brought fog lamps, projector headlamps and a stiffer body, with 16-inch wheels, a limited-slip differential and six-speed manual on top models. The NB is the only generation with a factory turbocharged model, the 2004–05 Mazdaspeed MX-5 (Roadster Turbo in Japan); a limited 100-car MX-5 SP (2002, Australia) made 200 bhp. The page's UK table lists 146 bhp for the 2001–05 1.8, while its text quotes 152 bhp (Japan, UK and Australia) or 143 bhp (US only); both text figures are given as separate trims.

Mazda's planned Alfa Romeo platform-sharing deal was cancelled in 2014, so Fiat Chrysler built the 124 Spider on the MX-5's bones instead.

The NC Miata's folding hard top was the trick: it retracted into the trunk without stealing any cargo space, something folding hardtops of that era usually couldn't manage.

In 1974 Alfa built a one-off on this Spider: a Porsche-style solid rear window and lift-out roof panels, fewer than 2,000 made, the only Spider ever with a part-solid roof.

Over 100,000 people voted to name this car "Duetto" — but a chocolate-snack maker had already trademarked the word, and a Milan court ruling forced Alfa to sell it as the Spider 1600 instead.

After nearly 25 years of manual-only Spiders, the final Series 4 cars quietly added something Alfa purists never expected: an optional automatic transmission.

The mid-80s Spider's Quadrifoglio Verde trim went all-in on a single look: blood-red carpets and grey leather with red stitching, and it only ever came in three exterior colors.

This Spider was built not by Alfa but by Pininfarina itself, on a platform shared with General Motors.

The 916 Spider's strongest naturally aspirated engine, the 192 PS 3.0 12V Busso V6, was never offered in its GTV coupe twin.
The Frogeye had no boot lid at all — owners reached the spare wheel by tilting the seats forward into the dark cavity behind, a ritual they likened to potholing.

The Fairlady 2000's SR311 update came with a five-speed manual gearbox in 1967 — a genuinely unusual spec for any production car of that era.
