The first-generation Cee'd (model code ED) was designed in Frankfurt, Germany, with Miklós Kovács leading the design team, and built in Žilina, Slovakia from 2006 to 2012. It shares its platform with the Hyundai i30, and was sold as a five-door hatchback, as the Cee'd SW station wagon, and as the three-door Pro_cee'd, the sports version, which is 5 cm lower and 5 cm longer. On release the warranty was one of the most extensive and longest in Europe, seven years or 150,000 km for the powertrain and five years for the entire vehicle. A facelifted model was unveiled at the 63rd Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009, with Kia's new corporate grille, the Tiger Nose. The Cee'd became Kia's best-selling European model from 2007 to 2011, and approximately 646,300 units of the first generation were produced.

Two years into this generation, Kia quietly gave the entire Ceed lineup a 48-volt mild-hybrid diesel option — badged EcoDynamics+ — well before hybrid assist was standard fare in the compact class.

The Pro_Cee'd GT, launched on this generation in 2013, was Kia's first-ever performance car — and the first European-style hot hatch from any Korean automaker.
