The Iso Rivolta IR 300, introduced in 1962 by Iso Automotoveicoli, was the first luxury car from a company known for motorcycles and micro cars such as the Isetta: chairman Renzo Rivolta and former Ferrari engineer Giotto Bizzarrini wanted an everyday usable gran turismo in the original sense, priced between a Jaguar and a Ferrari. Bizzarrini developed a pressed-steel, welded-panel chassis designed to flex fore and aft, with unequal-length wishbones at the front, a de Dion rear axle located by twin trailing arms and a Watt's linkage with a Salisbury limited-slip differential, and four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes (the rears inboard); the body, a 2+2 coupé on a 2,700 mm wheelbase, was drawn by the young Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone. Like De Tomaso it took an American drivetrain: a 5.4-litre Chevrolet 327 V8 (10.5:1 compression, 360 lb·ft) with an all-synchromesh BorgWarner four-speed, later a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic. Presented at the 1962 Turin Motor Show, 797 IR 300s were built before production ended in 1970 amid slow sales (the expensive press-tool dies were kept and panels made in batches by a subcontractor), and a race variant that resembled the 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Breadvan was homologated as a touring car. The IR 340 is catalogued as its own generation; the page lists 300 hp in the text and 295 hp in the technical table, so no power figure is entered.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Iso's hotter IR 340 was always the rare one: of the roughly 964 Rivolta grand tourers built before production ended, only 167 got the 340hp engine.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
