The Ford Sierra was built by Ford Europe from 1982 to 1993, and sold in North America as the Merkur XR4Ti from 1985 to 1989. During its lifetime it was available with a wide range of engines: Pinto and CVH four-cylinders, DOHC fours, Cologne V6s, the XR4i and XR4x4 with a 2.8-litre fuel-injected V6, the turbocharged 2.0-litre YB Cosworth in the RS Cosworth and RS500, and Peugeot and Endura-D diesels. The 2.0 V6 and 2.3 V6 versions were dropped at the end of 1985 and the 1.3-litre was discontinued in 1986, a carburetted 1.8 and a fuel-injected 2.0-litre were added at Geneva in 1985, and in 1990 the 2.3-litre diesel was replaced by a 1.8-litre turbodiesel. In the Mark II Sierras the 2.8 Cologne engine was replaced by a 2.9-litre version, with both giving 150 PS in uncatalyzed trim.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The RS500 evolution existed purely to satisfy racing rules: Ford built exactly 500 road cars, the bare legal minimum, just to homologate the Sierra Cosworth for Group A.
