FactThe Mk2 Punto brought back Fiat's original round badge for the first time in decades - a nod to the company's 100th birthday.
Project 188 was launched in September 1999 at the Frankfurt Motor Show with all-new styling that kept the original Punto's shape, an overhauled chassis and interior and a new torsion-beam rear suspension. It was the first Fiat in decades to wear the original round Fiat badge, in honour of the company's centenary, and was shown alongside the Pininfarina Fiat Wish hardtop-convertible concept. The 1.1 and 1.4 engines were dropped for emissions reasons, leaving a 1.2 with 8 or 16 valves (60 and 80 PS) and a 1.9 common-rail diesel; the sporty versions were the 1.2 16v Sporting with a six-speed manual (or Speedgear CVT) and the 1.8 HGT, which could reach almost 130 mph and 0–60 mph in 8.6 seconds. It was built in Italy until 2010 (and in Serbia as the Zastava 10) and as the Punto Classic; 2.96 million were made.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Abarth badged the Grande Punto's hottest version with a factory-fitted "esseesse" kit that pushed the T-Jet turbo four past 180 hp over the dealer counter.

Look closely at this Punto's nose and headlights — the family resemblance to the Maserati Coupé is real: Giorgetto Giugiaro designed both.

The Mk2 Punto brought back Fiat's original round badge for the first time in decades - a nod to the company's 100th birthday.

The Punto almost became a Renault — Giugiaro first pitched its design for Renault's X57 project, which became the Clio. Renault passed, so he took it to Fiat instead.

Japan was a minor market for the Swift: when it passed 2 million sales in 2011, about 39% were in India and 27% in Europe, against roughly 15% at home.

To adapt the Horizon for America, Chrysler bought nearly 100 Volkswagen Rabbits purely to reverse engineer them.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.

In June 2003, a Mégane II became the subject of the first ever live televised crash test with a real human driver at the wheel instead of a dummy — filmed by Top Gear.

This Wagon R redesigned its rear doors specifically to kill off the D-pillar — bigger doors with built-in quarter glass solved what earlier generations needed a whole extra pillar for.
