FactThe Thor is too big to be a kei car by design, built deliberately over the class's size and displacement limits.
The Daihatsu Thor (also the Toyota Roomy and Tank, and the Subaru Justy) is a five-seat mini MPV with sliding doors introduced on 9 November 2016 as the successor to the Coo, based on the M700 Boon and sitting below the Sienta in Toyota's line-up; it is designed and built by Daihatsu at Ikeda, Osaka, sold only in Japan, and is not a kei car because its exterior dimensions and 996 cc displacement exceed the class regulations. From 2016 until 2020 the Tank was exclusive to Toyopet Store and Netz Store and the Roomy to Toyota Store and Corolla Store; pre-facelift, the regular Thor shared its front bumper with the Tank and the Justy Custom, and the Thor Custom shared its bumper with the Roomy and the regular Justy. The Thor and Roomy were facelifted on 15 September 2020 with the Tank discontinued (dealership mergers), and the facelifted Justy followed on 24 September (Justy Custom discontinued). Engines are the 996 cc 1KR-FE three-cylinder (51 kW / 68 hp) and the turbocharged 996 cc 1KR-VET three-cylinder (72 kW / 97 hp), with a CVT, front-engine, front- or four-wheel drive; wheelbase 2,490 mm (98.0 in), length 3,700–3,725 mm, width 1,670 mm (65.7 in), height 1,735 mm (68.3 in), kerb weight 1,070–1,110 kg (FWD) and 1,130–1,140 kg (4WD). Predecessors were the Toyota bB and Ractis (Roomy/Tank) and the Subaru Dex and Trezia (Justy). Japan sales of the Roomy: 78,690 in 2017, 86,265 in 2018, 91,650 in 2019, 134,801 in 2021 and 67,698 in 2024.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

Rivals
Same body, same money, other badges — tap any card to flip.

This Presage minivan shares its underlying platform with the Teana sedan and the North American Murano crossover — one architecture doing three very different jobs.

Subaru's family-hauling Exiga got an unlikely STi treatment in 2009 — front spoiler, sport muffler, tighter suspension and a leather Momo wheel — but only 300 were ever built.

YRV stands for Young Recreational Vehicle, a mini MPV built to out-handle its own segment rivals.

The Terraza was Buick's first-ever minivan for the North American market - a badge-engineered cousin of the Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, and Saturn Relay.

The restyled 1994 Lumina Minivan quietly made American automotive history: it was the first minivan sold in the US with a power sliding door you could open by remote.

The first-generation Lumina APV minivan was nicknamed the "Dustbuster" by the press for its sharply sloped windshield, which pushed the dashboard far forward of the driver.

Its steeply sloped windshield gave the Lumina APV one of the deepest dashboards ever fitted to a mass-produced car.

The first Presage wasn't really its own car underneath — most of its parts came straight from the Nissan R'nessa, with more shared with its platform twin, the Bassara.
