FactThe 145 hid an engineering oddity under its skin: the same platform was built to accept both old-school longitudinal boxer engines and modern transverse four-cylinders.
The Alfa Romeo 145 (Type 930A) is a three-door small family car produced by Alfa Romeo from 1994 to 2000, launched at the 1994 Turin Motor Show as the replacement for the ageing 33; the development of Tipo 930 lasted four years, and 221,037 145s were built. It is based on the Fiat Group's Tipo Due platform with a unibody structure and MacPherson strut front and rear trailing arm suspension, and a peculiarity is that it was designed to take both longitudinal engines (the older Boxers, mounted as in the 33 and Alfasud) and transverse engines (the diesels and the Twin Spark). At launch the range comprised a 1.9 litre turbo diesel and the boxer petrol engines from the 33 in 1.3, 1.6 and range-topping 1.7 16-valve forms; the flagship 145 Quadrifoglio (Cloverleaf in the UK) with the two-litre 16-valve Twin Spark from the 155 was launched at the September 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show. From January 1997 all the boxers were phased out in favour of 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 Twin Spark 16-valve engines, the Junior trim level arrived in September 1997, and the 1999 restyle introduced the common-rail 1.9 JTD turbodiesel. It was superseded by the 147 in 2000.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.
