FactThe hot-hatch 147 GTA needed real surgery to fit its tires: Alfa widened the body 15mm per side just to clear its 225/45R17 rubber.
A small family hatchback by Walter de Silva and Wolfgang Egger at Centro Stile Alfa Romeo (Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign did the restyling), launched at the Turin Motor Show in June 2000 to replace the 145 and 146 on the running gear of the larger 156, and voted European Car of the Year for 2001. It came as a 3- or 5-door hatchback with 1.6 and 2.0 Twin Spark petrols and 1.9 JTD / JTDm diesels, the flagship being the 250 PS 3.2 V6 GTA (2002-05, listed separately, and tested by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear). A paddle-operated Selespeed automated manual was available from launch; Turismo and Lusso were the initial trims, and the 147 was the first Alfa Romeo with dual-zone climate control. Built at Pomigliano d'Arco on the Type Two rev. 3 platform shared with the Alfa Romeo GT, 156, Fiat Bravo/Brava and Multipla and Lancia Lybra; the Giulietta (940) replaced it. Euro NCAP scored the 2001 car 21 for adult occupants.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

To adapt the Horizon for America, Chrysler bought nearly 100 Volkswagen Rabbits purely to reverse engineer them.

The Mk3 Focus RS's AWD system could send 100 percent of engine power to the rear wheels alone — built not in Ford's home country, but at the Saarlouis plant in Germany.

In June 2003, a Mégane II became the subject of the first ever live televised crash test with a real human driver at the wheel instead of a dummy — filmed by Top Gear.
