The Mk4 Polo GTI was outgunned by the Corsa, MINI and its own SEAT Ibiza stablemate, so VW quickly built the Cup Edition with about 180 PS.
VW's own baby hot hatch leapfrogged this one — the smaller Lupo GTI got a six-speed gearbox on the identical engine that the facelifted Polo GTI never received.
