This Laguna shared its bones with unlikely relatives — the Nissan Altima, Teana, and Murano all rode the same ‘D’ platform — and it was the first car put through Renault’s new electromagnetic compatibility test unit.

This Laguna beat nearly every European car to keyless entry and ignition, a Valeo-developed system so unreliable it ended up dinging Renault's reputation instead.

In 1996 Renault built just 500 Laguna 1.8 RT Sports, a hundred in each of five colours, including a metallic blue normally kept for the bigger-engined 2.0.
