The track-focused 718 Spyder (born as the Boxster Spyder) quietly broke new ground for Porsche: its flat-six was the brand's first engine ever with cylinder deactivation.
Porsche secretly built a stripped-down 981 Boxster prototype named after a 1960s hillclimb racer — the Bergspyder never reached production; it failed its own feasibility tests.
