The 405 Mi16x4's viscous-coupling four-wheel-drive system was derived from the one developed for Peugeot's 405 T16 Grand Raid Paris-Dakar racer.

The 405 was already a sales phenomenon within its first years: the 500,000th car left Peugeot's Sochaux plant in 1989, and by 1990 the total had already topped one million.

Ten versions launched at once in July 1987, and it still won European Car of the Year with a record vote count.
