No Rekord coupe was offered for the first time since 1961, Opel steering style-seekers to its new Manta instead.

The Rekord D shared its body with the six-cylinder Commodore B, a badge-engineering trick hidden under four-cylinder sheet metal.

The Rekord B's cam-in-head engine didn't just power this car — it stayed under the hood of every Rekord built for the next 21 years, until the nameplate retired in 1986.

Partway through its run, the humble Rekord A could be ordered with a 2.6-litre inline-six borrowed straight from Opel's flagship Kapitän.

Even this humble family Opel got the bespoke treatment: coachbuilder Autenrieth hand-built a handful of Rekord P2 convertibles, priced at nearly double a regular saloon.

Opel sold a stripped-down Rekord P1 under the Olympia name — buyers had their own nickname for it: the "Bauern-Buick," or Peasant's Buick.
