The 2016 SLK55 AMG was the last car ever sold under the SLK name - Mercedes retired it for "SLC" that same year, on the nameplate's 20th anniversary.

This SLK's sunroof could tint itself at the touch of a button — Mercedes called it Magic Sky Control, and it turned the glass from clear to opaque electronically.

The SLK55 Black Series traded its folding roof for a fixed carbon-fibre hardtop, bolted on for good.

This SLK generation piped warm air through the headrests themselves -- Mercedes called it Airscarf, letting you drop the top in cool weather without a cold neck.

This SLK folded its hardtop three seconds faster than before, and the smarter-folding roof stack freed up 63 more litres of trunk space with the top down.

While BMW M chased a notoriously jerky automated manual for the M3, Mercedes kept the SLK32 AMG on a conventional automatic — just tuned to shift up to 35% faster.

The R170 was the first Mercedes-Benz to offer a fully retractable metal roof called the Vario-roof, which folded into the trunk in about 25 seconds.
