The CLS 53 AMG's vertical-slat Panamericana grille is a deliberate nod to the 1950s 300 SL — bolted to a car that also runs a mild-hybrid turbo six.

The CLS was built around its sleek four-seat layout for two whole generations — then this one quietly added a middle rear seat and became a five-seater.

The Shooting Brake version of this CLS carries a strange title: Wikipedia calls it the most expensive serial-production station wagon sold anywhere since 1992.

This generation's CLS Shooting Brake, including the 63 AMG version, has held the title of the most expensive production station wagon in the world since 1992.

The CLS63 AMG actually made LESS torque than the CLS55 it replaced. Mercedes detuned it on purpose so the engine wouldn't overwhelm its new 7-speed gearbox.

Only 55 were made: the CLS 55 AMG IWC Edition paired the car with an exclusive IWC Ingenieur watch, a 2006 collaboration between AMG and the Swiss watchmaker.

The C219 CLS-Class was developed as a low-volume niche model but ended up outselling Mercedes' own sales projections, prompting the brand to expand the four-door coupe concept to other model lines.
