Every Lexus GS before this one had been a dressed-up Toyota Crown underneath. The L10, debuting at Pebble Beach in 2011, was the first GS not based on any Crown model, riding its own ‘New N’ platform.

The GS 450h beat every other luxury brand to a genuine milestone: the first mass-production rear-wheel-drive luxury hybrid, years before hybrids were a luxury-segment given.

Lexus leaned hard into drama to launch the second-gen GS, promoting it with a line straight out of Macbeth: "Something Wicked This Way Comes."

The S140 GS was designed in-house by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign studio, an unusual choice for a Lexus sedan of that era.
