The retro 2002 Thunderbird shared its platform with a Jaguar sedan: Ford's DEW chassis underpinned the Lincoln LS, the Jaguar S-Type, and loosely even the Mustang.

For the Thunderbird's 35th birthday in 1990, Ford didn't just paint the Super Coupe two-tone — buyers got a whole anniversary kit: special floor mats, a car cover, a pen, and a poster.

This Thunderbird exists because of one blunt question: Ford's president asked the design VP if he'd actually want the old model in his own driveway, got a flat no, and sent the whole car back to the drawing board.

Ford shrank the Thunderbird onto the Fox platform for its 25th anniversary, then made a six-cylinder engine standard two years later to save money.

A $2,700 price cut turned the Thunderbird into Ford's best-selling generation of the nameplate, after it quietly gave up full-size luxury duty to the LTD Landau.

At over 5,000 pounds, this is the heaviest Thunderbird Ford ever built, sharing its bones with the Lincoln Continental Mark IV.

The '57 Thunderbird's sales spike wasn't really popularity — Ford kept the line running three extra months because the all-new 1958 model was late.
