The wild-winged Escort RS Cosworth wore Mark V Escort bodywork, but underneath it wasn't an Escort at all — it ran the four-wheel-drive Sierra's floorpan, mechanicals and longitudinal engine.

Ford badged it the "Mark IV" Escort for the public — but inside the company it was never a new generation at all, just a Mark III facelift carrying the internal codename "Erika-86."

Only three Mk III Escort RS Turbos were ever painted black instead of the usual Diamond White — and one was built specifically for Princess Diana.

In its last year on sale, a humble 1.6-litre Escort Mk II variant nicknamed the "One Six Double O" Sport outsold every other car in South Africa.

After Hannu Mikkola drove an Escort to victory in the 1970 London-to-Mexico World Cup Rally, Ford sold a whole road-going special edition named after the win: the Escort Mexico.
