Alpina's D3 Bi-Turbo, unveiled on the F30 chassis in 2013, squeezed 516 lb-ft of torque from a diesel straight-six — enough twist to embarrass plenty of V8 muscle cars, in a car also sold as a wagon.

Alpina's D3 didn't borrow its diesel engine from BMW's own 325d or 335d — it reached down to the smaller 123d hatchback's four-cylinder instead, tuned it up, and still came out more fuel-efficient than both.
