Alpina quoted a conservative top speed for the B6 — independent testing clocked it at 328 km/h (204 mph), quietly making the tuner's grand tourer faster than BMW's own M6.

Alpina could have borrowed BMW's own M6 V10 for the B6, but built a supercharged V8 instead — it made the Alpina quicker to sip less fuel, not just faster.

Alpina's E36-based B6 2.8 wasn't mechanically consistent throughout its short run — cars built before August 1992 lacked VANOS variable valve timing entirely, while later cars got BMW's new system.

South Africa's own 325iS quietly outgunned every other 325i on earth — built with a 2.7-litre Alpina engine instead of the usual 2.5.

The B6, an E21 3 Series with a 2.8-litre M30 six, was the first car Alpina put on the market as a manufacturer.
