The W-34 was a special option code on the 1968–70 Toronado: the 455 cu in (7.5 L) V8 was rated at 400 hp at 5000 rpm (500 lb-ft at 3200 rpm) against 375 hp in standard form, and the option included a cold air induction system for the air cleaner, a special performance camshaft and a "GT" transmission calibrated for quick and firm upshifts and better torque multiplication at 5 mph. Dual exhaust outlets similar to the 1966–67 cars, with cutouts in the bumper, were included (the standard cars had a single hidden outlet), and for 1970 only the W-34 option also included special "GT" badges. The W-34 Toronado was capable of 0–60 mph in 7.5 seconds and the standing quarter mile in 15.7 seconds at 89.8 mph.

In 1992 GM and Avis tested TravTek, a GPS navigation system with a synthesized voice, in rental Troféos at Orlando's airport.

In 1992, Oldsmobile and Avis quietly piloted a GPS nav system called TravTek in rental Toronado Troéfos at Orlando airport — built-in cell phone and spoken directions included, a decade before nav screens went mainstream.

The third-gen Toronado's independent rear suspension wasn't Oldsmobile's own work — it was designed by Cadillac engineers, and it bought back the rear-seat and trunk room the smaller body had taken away.

From 1974-1976 the Toronado quietly became a GM test bed for driver and passenger airbags — the 'Air Cushion Restraint System' — a full decade before airbags became an industry standard.

Squeezing a big V8 into the front-drive Toronado took an odd trick: the automatic's torque converter wasn't bolted to the gearset at all — it spun it through a silent Hy-Vo chain.

The Toronado's speedometer looked like a slot machine: a fixed needle stayed still while a rotating drum of numbers spun past behind it, climbing as the car gained speed.

The Celica XX, Japan's name for the A60 Supra, introduced the world's first in-car navigation computer.

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
