The Noble M14 was a one-off prototype, never put into production, that debuted at the 2004 British Motor Show as a preview of the direction that led directly to the M15; its highly modified Ford Duratec 30 3.0-litre V6 made 400 bhp (406 PS) at 6,100 rpm and 385 lb-ft at 4,750 rpm, through a 6-speed MMT6 manual. Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive; wheelbase 2,438 mm (96.0 in), length 4,267 mm (168.0 in), width 1,935 mm (76.2 in, including mirrors), height 1,150 mm (45.3 in), kerb weight 1,150 kg (2,535 lb).

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
