FactA four-wheel-drive Starion prototype borrowed its transfer case from the Pajero for a Group B homologation bid that never happened.
A two-door fastback sports coupé with a front-mounted engine driving the rear wheels, built by Mitsubishi at Okazaki from 1982 to 1989 (model years 1983–89) and sold as the Colt Starion in the UK and as the Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler Conquest in North America; one of the first modern Japanese turbocharged performance cars with electronic fuel injection. The chassis derived from the Sapporo / Galant Lambda GSR, with MacPherson struts and sway bars front and rear. It came in a narrowbody (only through 1985.5, to comply with Japanese size and two-litre tax rules) and, from 1986 in the US, an intercooled widebody (Starion ESI-R, Conquest TSi). The name is said to be a contraction of "Star of Arion", Hercules' horse. Most markets had the 2.0 L Sirius G63B; the US the 2.6 L Astron G54B, which Europe adopted from 1987 and Japan's GSR-VR used. In Japan from 1984 to 1987 the top GSR-V had the 12-valve Dual Action Super Head, redlined at 7,000 rpm. Turbo models ranged from 145 to 200 PS. A Group B-era Starion 4WD prototype with a Pajero transfer case never homologated; drag coefficient 0.32. Production: 19,438 in 1986, 17,605 in 1987, 10,655 in 1988, 1,961 in 1989.

Owning one
We don’t estimate running costs for a car like this. What it costs depends on its condition, its specialist and how it is driven, and an average would mislead.

The Starion's name was rumored in period to be a mistranslation of "Stallion," though Mitsubishi maintained it was an intentional blend of "star" and "orion."

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
