FactPeugeot's trademark on three-digit numbers with a middle zero forced Mazda to call this car the 808 or 818 depending on market.
Introduced in September 1971 as a larger, more upscale car meant to replace the Familia and take on the Corolla, Sunny and Colt, offered as a two-door coupé, four-door sedan and five-door wagon with piston fours only (the rotary twin is the Savanna/RX-3). With the 1970s energy crisis the smaller Familia sold better, so both stayed on; it became Mazda's smallest car in North America. Sold as the Mazda 808 (Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the US, 1972–1977, only the 1.6 L, for $2,997 against the Civic and Corolla) and as the 818 in many others, because Peugeot had trademarked three-digit numbers with a central zero; the US-market 1.3 was the Mazda Mizer for 1976–77. A November 1973 1.6 L replaced the 1.5, and the desmogged versions were the "Grand Familia AP" (Anti Pollution), with considerably lower power. Kia built it from October 1975 as the Brisa II and, from December 1976, the K303 (production to 1981, when the licence expired).

The CTR Anniversary looks like a 911 but Ruf built its carbon monocoque from scratch, no Porsche body underneath.

The 228's coupe styling hides a sedan underneath: Maserati stretched it onto the longer four-door Biturbo chassis to make room for its biggest V6, which is literally where the name comes from — 2-door, 2.8 litre.

Switching to fuel injection let this V8 finally shed its trademark bonnet bulge — and only 405 of these flat-hooded Series 5 cars were built before the whole model retired in 1989.

Japanese buyers got a secret weapon in their MX-6 — the JDM-only KL-ZE V6 made about 40 more horsepower than the engine sold in the exact same car in North America.

An American tuner, Callaway Cars, built twin-turbo conversions of the GTV6 that boosted its V6 by fifty percent to 230 hp — turning Alfa's grand tourer into something far quicker than the factory ever intended.
